Abitibi Paper Retriever® Community Recycling Program

Drop off all of your paper products in the Abitibi bin located at Peters' Heating and Air Conditioning at 2925 25th St. Columbus, IN, between Marsh and CVS. Name a great fund-raising goal and chances are it's among hundreds that these organizations are already funding by collecting all types of clean, dry paper from their community. Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Division provides this program and collection service at no charge to each location. Bright green and yellow containers - called Abitibi Paper Retrievers® - are placed in highly visible, convenient areas where residents can drop off their newspaper, magazines, shopping catalogs and mail. Usually, the majority of the paper is received from the surrounding neighborhoods. Even areas that already provide curbside recycling are successful in raising money by providing a convenient place to drop off paper when families know that your organization will benefit from their donation.

Paper is weighed by a scale on the collection truck. A monthly statement detailing the weight of paper collected for that month is accompanied by a check for the amount collected. In addition, Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Division offers frequent contests and promotions to provide additional cash incentives. Over US $4.0 million was paid to participating organizations in 2006 alone. You can earn money to by starting a program at your school or church now!

Community Recognition
Local newspaper and radio sponsors help promote community awareness through specially created public service ads designed to encourage residents to donate their recyclable paper.

Environmentally Friendly
The Abitibi Paper Retriever® program has been recognized nationally for its successful recovery rate. Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Division is committed to providing this program since we are an end user of the paper we collect. Recovered paper is directed to processing centers where it is sorted into various grades and prepared for shipment. It is then routed to our de-inking facilities and mills where it is used to manufacture recycled content newsprint. By diverting this paper from the waste stream, we estimate that over 2.2 million cubic yards of landfill space is saved each year. In addition, by eliminating our ground wood and kraft pulping operations at certain newsprint mills, Abitibi-Consolidated reduced air emissions and waste water discharges.
